The 2009 Rafto Prize events Created: October 6, 2009 Modified: November 17, 2009 The 2009 Rafto Prize will be awarded to Malahat Nasibova from Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan, on Sunday 1 November, in Bergen. The Rafto Symposium "Azerbaijan's brave voices: The role of critical journalism in an oil rich state" will be held on Friday 30 October. Malahat Nasibova (40) is a correspondent for Turan, an independent information bureau in Azerbaijan
and for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. She is the leader of the human rights
organisation "Democracy and NGO's Development Resource Center" in Nakhchivan.
Nasibova has been a critical voice against the authorities for ten years and she
steadfastly refuses to give up the fight for freedom of speech. Malahat Nasibova,
reports on abuses of power, human rights violations and corruption in the isolated
Autonomous Republic Nakhchivan, which is part of Azerbaijan.

How important is a free press to the emergence of a free democracy, and how steep a price should we be prepared to pay for it? Part two of the symposium will discuss the natural resources of Azerbaijan. What responsibilities, if any, do foreign investors have to promote democracy? Is turning a blind eye to human-rights violations the price of doing business?
