ERR volunteers killed in South Kordofan, Sudan

The Rafto Foundation is deeply saddened by the killing of two volunteers affiliated with the Emergency Response Rooms (ERR) in Dilling City, South Kordofan, Sudan earlier this month.

Ali Karandl and Sara were part of the vast grassroots network of volunteers that has emerged across Sudan since the outbreak of war in 2023. Through the ERRs, they worked to protect and support civilians affected by the conflict. providing shelter, food assistance, and safety for displaced people and vulnerable communities under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions.

Over the past year, we have had the privilege of getting to know representatives of the Emergency Response Rooms through their work and commitment to protecting life and human dignity in the midst of war. The ERRs were awarded the Rafto Prize 2025 for their courageous civilian-led efforts to organize emergency aid and mutual support where formal structures have collapsed.

According to ERR, around 160 volunteers have lost their lives since the outbreak of the war in Sudan. The killing of Ali and Sara is a painful reminder of the immense risks faced daily by Sudanese civilians and volunteers working to keep their communities alive.

ERR has condemned the killing of volunteers and civilians and stressed that attacks on humanitarian actors must end. The network emphasizes that its work is impartial and essential for people in need, and that volunteers must be protected in order to continue delivering life-saving assistance.

– The international community cannot look away from Sudan. Civilians, volunteers, and human rights defenders must be protected. Attacks on ERR volunteers must have consequences says Executive Director in the Rafto Foundation, Jostein Hole Kobbeltvedt.

He also highlights the urgent need for greater international attention to the situation in Sudan and for stronger protection of civilians and humanitarian actors.

The war in Sudan has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with millions displaced and enormous humanitarian needs. Local volunteers and grassroots networks continue to play a crucial role in reaching civilians who lack access to protection and basic services.

Our thoughts are with ERR; the families, colleagues, and communities mourning the loss of Ali and Sara.
