The Rafto Foundation and 22 Other Organizations Receive Support from the Postcode Lottery

We’ve been looking forward to sharing some good news: As of March 1, the Rafto Foundation has become part of the Postcode Lottery. We are now one of a total of 23 organizations that receive support from the charitable lottery in the form of flexible, non-earmarked funding.

In the Postcode Lottery, you participate with your postcode, which means you always win together with your neighbors—who also hold tickets. While ticket buyers get the chance to win attractive cash prizes and perhaps even receive a visit from Tom and Jorun Stiansen, neighbors are also contributing to supporting good causes at the same time.

Together We Make a Difference

When many people take part in the Postcode Lottery together, it leads to fantastic results. Altogether, the Postcode Lottery in Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands has contributed more than NOK 150 billion to nonprofit organizations, making these lotteries one of the world’s largest private contributors to charitable causes.

In Norway, the Postcode Lottery has so far raised more than NOK 600 million for WWF World Wide Fund for Nature and SOS Children’s Villages.

“It’s truly exciting for us to welcome the Rafto Foundation to the Postcode Lottery,” says ambassador Jorun Stiansen.

“We know that you do incredibly important work in highlighting human rights violations and human rights defenders who deserve the world’s attention. We are both proud and humbled to be able to contribute to this important work,” adds her colleague Tom Stiansen.

What Is a Postcode, Exactly?

In the Postcode Lottery, your ticket number is based on your postal code and postcode. Each postal code area is divided into several postcodes, each representing a street, road, or neighborhood. This ensures that when someone wins, they don’t just win for themselves, they win together with their neighbors. The prizes are not awarded to just one lucky winner but are shared among all tickets in the entire neighborhood.

Just as important is that every ticket contributes to something bigger.

“At least 50 percent of the lottery’s revenue after prizes are paid out goes to good causes,” explains Jorun Stiansen.

A Major Impact for the Rafto Foundation

“That this will have a significant impact on the work we do is beyond doubt,” confirms Jostein Hole Kobbeltvedt, Executive Director of the Rafto Foundation.

“We live in a turbulent world where people, animals, and nature face major challenges. In such times, every contribution matters, but perhaps especially contributions that are long-term, stable, and without restrictions or conditions. Because the funds from the Postcode Lottery are not earmarked, organizations can use them wherever the need is greatest and where they will make the most difference.”
