The Ocean and Human Rights
As supporter of The One Ocean Expedition, The Rafto Foundation will contribute with our educational competence, and develop activities and material that will be used by teachers and students throughout and after the expedition.

BERGEN: In August 2021 the Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl sets sail for The One Ocean Expedition, lasting 19 months, visiting 36 ports worldwide. The expedition aims to create attention and share knowledge about the crucial role of the ocean for a sustainable development in a global perspective. The Rafto Foundation is one of the expedition's supporters, and will contribute in various ways, such as developing educational activities and material under the heading "The Ocean and Human Rights".
The human rights perspective
"This is a unique opportunity to put focus on sustainability and the role of the ocean. We also want to contribute to the discussion on how human rights are affected by ocean related industries. We are looking forward to be a part of this", says Jostein Hole Kobbeltvedt, Executive Director at the Rafto Foundation.
The Rafto Foundation is working closely together with all partners in the expedition through a team of educators that coordinate and develop educational activities throughout and after the expedition. The expedition will be offering tools and material to teachers of all grades from kindergarden level to the university level all over the world.
Will develop educational material
The many partners of the expedition all contribute with their unique competence and expertise, and the Rafto Foundation is responsible for developing material under the heading “The Ocean and human rights” for high school students, teachers and teacher educators.
The educational activities will be available online in Norwegian, English, Spanish and Portuguese and builds on how the ocean connects us all. From the endless possibilities and the human dependence on the sea, to the human rights of migrants and refugees travelling by sea and the topic of modern slavery and the human rights of workers on the ships and in the industry.
Students visiting the Rafto House
High school students who live in the Western part of Norway will be invited to visit the Rafto House to take part in our dialogbased education with the aim of learning from eachother, gaining new insights and building new knowledge of young peoples perspectives on climate change, dilemmas, responsibility and climate justice.
